So I'm asking here about the experience of others running Debian on G4 processor in general and a PowerBook G4 in particular. I read through a lot of posts last night, I liked what I read and thought I might try Debian on my PowerBook if it has a good likelihood of working. This brings me to my question - use of Debian on a PowerBook G4.

Among the problems I have experienced and haven't been able to solve: lack of native video resolution (openSUSE 11), dependency problems installing software that installs easily on x86 architecture (openSUSE 11), difficulty in figuring out how to add repositories (Yellow Dog 6) and inability to run the MacOS inside Linux (using Mac-on-Linux in particular) (Ubuntu).
But powerpc architecture seems to be a sideline, even for those distros to support it, and I have had difficulty getting any distro I have tried to do what I would need to do in order to switch to it as my main OS. I examined a number of distros in the safe virtualizing environment (via Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion and VirtualBox), and decided to install Linux on my PowerBook G4 so I would have more portable use of it. I very much like the Mac and the MacOS, but what brought me to Linux is the open source philosophy and the idea that I can actually learn something about the way a computer operates by using it. Linux has come a long way since then and I am impressed with how much easier it is to use now.
I have been a Mac user for most of my adult life after starting on DOS (doesn't that date me), moving to Apple when the Mac Plus came out, and sticking with the MacOS except for a brief, unsuccessful try with SUSE linux (6.5). I am fairly new to Linux, having only played around with it in the last six months on a virtual environment on two of my Intel Macs.
